Located between Southend and Shoeburyness, the small area is home to some of the borough's most affluent and influential people. Thorpe Bay's seafront is one of Essex's most picturesque areas, and has been featured on a recent television trailer for BBC Radio.
Thorpe Hall Golf Club is one of the main golf clubs in Southend-on-Sea. Thorpe Bay Bowling Club and Lawn Tennis Club are located on the North side of Thorpe Esplanade within close proximity of each other and are private organisations open for annual membership, as is Thorpe Bay Yacht Club, a short way further down the seafront.
A great place for a leisurely drink is ‘Ocean Beach’. Set on the seafront, the outdoor decking area opens up stunning views of Southend Pier and the surrounding seafront. The Roslin is an exquisite four star hotel which also offers a tremendous dining experience from its restaurant which has been awarded an AA rosette. The complex also offers afternoon tea, spa treatments and has a wedding and function venue.
Thorpe Bay also has its own shopping area, The Broadway. This area includes a Post Office, two supermarkets and three banks as well as restaurants and a variety of shops along a quarter of a mile stretch.
Thorpe Bay is served by the reliable c2c train line, operated by National Express. The line runs from Shoeburyness to London Fenchurch Street, calling at stations such as Leigh-On-Sea, Basildon and Upminster along the way. Trains operate every 15 minutes during the day however are more frequent during rush hour. The journey from Thorpe Bay to Fenchurch Street, can take approximately 65 minutes given no delays and depending on the number of stops.
Thorpe Bay also has strong bus links to surrounding towns with 4 different bus routes providing easy access and is best accessed by car via the A127 from Rayleigh. Some roads are resident permit holders only, while others are free to park on. There are council run car parks along the seafront.
The area mainly comprises large residential houses and bungalows, the majority of which have remained as family homes, as originally intended. The average property price as of 2016 is £390,000. Purpose built flats can be purchased in the area for in excess of £160,000 depending on location however prices can range up to £1 million plus for houses in the lucrative Thorpe Bay Gardens area.
Thorpe Bay is home to some of the best secondary schools in the country. The Grammar Schools, Southend High School for Boys and Southend High School for Girls consistently achieve excellent results and both are regularly in the top 100 for GCSE and A Levels in national league tables. Futures College is a mixed foundation secondary and sixth form school offering GCSE and A Level qualifications. Bournes Green Junior School is a popular choice for families with younger children and is frequently at the top of the wish list of families moving to the area.
